Well here’s something I don’t think anyone was ever expecting: Sega has announced it intends to bring classic 90’s beat ’em up Streets of Rage to the big screen.
Clearly not content to stop at the live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie they have in the works, Sega Group’s production arm is teaming up with Tomoya Suzuki, president and CEO of Stories International, and Fear the Walking Dead producer Circle of Confusion to bring the project to life.
For those that aren’t aware, Streets of Rage tells the gripping tale of a rogue cop on a mission to take down a big city crime boss called Mr X.
Okay, it’s not the most original yarn… but hopefully Sega and Circle of Confusion find a way to do something interesting with it.
The house of Sonic also revealed its intentions to bring what seems like every single one of its old franchise to TV or film at some point in the coming years.
I’m not kidding – Variety reports that Stories International is in the process of partnering with major studios, producers, and filmmakers to co-develop adaptations of House of the Dead, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Virtua Fighter, and Crazy Taxi.
You read that right – Crazy motherfucking Taxi.
These are some of the most well loved SEGA games, and we are thrilled to be working with Stories to adapt them into major film and television franchises.
Clearly Sega’s big plan is to throw as many of their properties as they can at the wall and see what sticks. You’d hope at least one or two end up being good.
